Georgia PTA serves to strengthen collective voices to educate, empower, and engage families and communities to advocate on statewide issues that affect the lives of our children. The legislative priorities are based on child related education and safety policy issues surveyed by the members of Georgia PTA. (http://www.georgiapta.org/issues-action/legislative-priorities-2/)
The PTA’s primary mission is to support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children. One of our purposes is to secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth. For over 100 years, Georgia PTA has been involved with the legislative process, both alone and in cooperation with other organizations to advocate for children on legislation that impacts them. Click here to understand more about why we advocate.
To increase our committee’s effectiveness, we will focus on these strategies:
- Create an information network for all local PTA chapters’ Legislative Committees and/or Executive Boards
- Increase student involvement and understanding in the legislative process
- Increase parent and teacher involvement in the legislative process
- Support Advocacy Day at the Capitol, 2022-23
- Support PTA Day at the Capitol, March 2023
- Provide and support advocacy training for PTA Legislative Committees and other PTA members
In 2016, Georgia PTA led the campaign to inform educators, parents, teachers, and communities on the Constitution Amendment – Opportunity School District, which was being promoted by Governor, Nathan Deal. Together, voters joined forces with Georgia PTA, and the Constitution Amendment – Opportunity School District was defeated.
